Umi Spotlight: Joy Segun-Odeyemi

A mum from Ibadan, Nigeria

With Umi Spotlight, we are sharing the best of what other mothers have figured out both in their motherhood journey and in life.

On this edition, Joy Segun-Odeyemi talks about the assumptions she had before she had kids, the reasons she is trying to be a good mother and her experience with postpartum. Find out more about her and her work here

What's an assumption you had before you became a mum that you found untrue when you began your journey of motherhood?
I assumed children aged 0-5years didn’t need any other thing apart from food, and everything other thing would sort itself. When I began my motherhood journey, God orchestrated my path to come across trainings, teachings etc. that enlightened me on the need to be deliberate with the formative years of my children from the day they were born. This saved me. Now apart from the normal milestones that children should accomplish, I have personal milestones for my children (when they should be able to pray on their own, when they should be able to do some chores, how independent they should be at certain ages etc).
