How about we do this summer break differently

Summer break is here and it is always bitter sweet for parents. While I look forward to having my kid around a little more, I am already dreading the disruption that might come from her being in my face more than she is now. I am sure some of you can relate to that.

So, I thought we could see this from a different perspective. Over the years as she leaves for school, there are some things that I wish she could be exposed to that she is not getting in school currently. And I do not have the time to give her that exposure, because of my schedule. How about we decide this summer break, to expose our kids to education beyond what's been taught in school. How about we teach them more about our family values, culture, hobbies, adventure, and more amazing things that they may not have enough of in school.

We could expose them to these things by:

  • Engaging them in chores at home (for kids who are already in that age bracket). That is, we give them responsibility and have them be more involved in the house.

  • Travel: Travelling is a very adventurous way to learn about new cultures, language, and more. You could travel with your kids to another state or another country, just so you guys can have fun. If you have family members outside of where you stay, you could travel with your kids to meet/catch up with their cousins. Or if you and your extended family members are close and you trust them, you could leave your kids there while you come back to pick them up.

  • Summer camp: Another amazing way to give your kids some adventure. And trust me, they will learn a lot. Just make sure the camp is aligned with what you believe.

  • Or you could fill your house with recreational games. Chess, slides, giant jenga (what else?). You know, all the fun things that can help your kids stay active and entertained, but also teach them something.

  • If you've noticed some special skills in your kids, this summer break might also be the perfect avenue to enrol into a program that helps them develop that skill.

By the time you go through this list of activities, the break will be over, your kids will be entertained, learned a few things and you will all get back into the school routine.
